Intro to Scent Detection Program

Perfect for: Dogs 8 months or older who love to sniff or “hunt” for things!

This 6-week group class, modeled after the National Association of Canine Scent Work (NACSW) Intro to Nose Work, is ideal for:

  • Senior dogs.
  • Working dog breeds.
  • High-energy or physically impaired dogs.
  • Dogs with mild emotional issues, like those often seen in rescues.
  • Low confidence dogs

What to Expect:

In this class, your dog will learn to become an effective hunter using high-value treats like chicken, hot dogs, or venison. Through fun and engaging activities, your dog will build confidence, lessen fear and anxiety, and burn energy in a low-impact way.

  • Great mental stimulation.
  • Strengthens the bond between dog and handler.
  • Provides a rewarding job for your dog.
  • Easy to practice at home or progress to competition.

Class Details:

  • 6 weekly sessions (60–75 minutes each).
  • Dogs must be crate-trained and comfortable being separated from their handler between rounds of “hunting.”

New: Private scent work training is also available for one-on-one instruction.

Intro to Odor Program

For graduates of the Intro to Scent Detection Program. This 6-week program builds on the foundational skills from the Intro course, teaching dogs to identify and hunt for specific odors. Using essential oils like birch, your dog will learn to track scents to their source with precision.

What Your Dog Will Learn:

  • Hunt for the odor “birch” using cotton swabs placed in scent vessels.
  • Progress from paired food and odor rewards to identifying odors independently.
  • Introduction to additional odors, including anise and clove.

Benefits:

  • Enhanced scent-tracking skills.
  • Prepares your dog to take the NACSW Odor Recognition Test if interested in competing in NACSW competitions or to do more advanced scent detection work.

Class Details:

  • 6 weekly sessions (60–75 minutes each).
  • Pre-requisite: Completion of Intro to Scent Detection and instructor recommendation.
